What are the benefits of massage?
Massage physically relaxes your body, calms your nervous system, calms heart rate, slows respiration, stretches connective tissue, reduces chronic pain, improves red blood cell count, relieves aching muscles, improves muscle tone, relieves cramped muscles, speeds recovery from injury, reduces tension headaches, increases tissue metabolism, decreases muscle deterioration, increases range of motion, stimulates release of endorphins, strengthens the immune system, reduces swelling, improves posture and skin tone. Massage emotionally reduces anxiety and provides a feeling of well being. Massage mentally reduces stress, promotes quality sleep, improves productivity, induces mental relaxation.
What should I expect from my first massage therapy session?
We will sit down and go over your health history. We can talk about any medical conditions you have and if there is a specific reason you are getting a massage. You can ask any questions you may have about your massage, and just make yourself comfortable. You don’t have to do anything but relax!
How often should I get a massage?
You can schedule a massage as often as you feel you need to. Once a month is recommended to keep lasting benefits.
Can massages help with headaches?
Yes, the tension release associated with massage is actually a natural remedy for treating headaches or migraines. Be sure to let Lauren know beforehand if you are suffering from such an ailment for particular attention to those pressure points.
Can massage help me lose weight?
While there is no substitute for exercise and a healthy diet, Massage treatments are known to lower levels of your stress-eating hormone, cortisol, so you’re less likely to want to eat thereafter.
Should I talk during the massage?
Some people are simply uncomfortable with silence and prefer to chat during their massage. However, this is generally a time of relaxation and you are not expected to talk. Be sure to advise Lauren of any discomfort or tension and if you’d like anything adjusted to be more comfortable.
What if I fall asleep during the massage?
No problem! Falling asleep at any other time might be considered rude, but not during a massage. Lauren will take this as a compliment to her skill for creating a sense of relaxation and ease.
Can I get a massage if I’m pregnant?
Lauren is a specialist in prenatal massages – which are wonderful for alleviating the aches and pains of pregnancy. It’s best not to get a massage in your first trimester, but thereafter you will be fine, just make sure you inform Lauren that you are pregnant when booking your prenatal massage.
When should I avoid getting a massage?
If you do have any health concerns, you should check with your general practitioner before getting a massage so as not to acerbate any issues. If you are feeling unwell at all, or have any contagious skin conditions, reschedule your massage until you’re not ill or contagious. Those undergoing chemotherapy or other intensive medical treatments are also not suited to getting a massage, as are women in their first trimester of pregnancy.
What do I wear for the massage?
Dress to your level of comfort, the idea of a massage is to be completely relaxed and comfortable. Some prefer to remain in their underwear, others are quite happy to be naked for the massage – either way, your therapist will provide you with space to get ready, and a sheet for cover.
Will the massage hurt?
If you find the pressure too intense during your massage, just ask Lauren to adjust it. Certain massage modalities may result in a bit of soreness in the days following, but drinking lots of water is helpful to reduce soreness.
